More about this category
A mesh jacket, also called an airflow jacket or summer jacket, is made largely of open mesh. As soon as you ride, the air flows straight through the jacket. The areas that hit the tarmac first in a fall, such as the shoulders and elbows, are made of tougher textile.
Mesh sounds fragile, but a good mesh jacket is tested to EN 17092. The Alpinestars Chrome Superairflow Hoodie and the Alpinestars Stella Chrome Superairflow Hoodie achieve class AA, with Nucleon Flex Plus Level 1 armour on the shoulders and elbows.
The more mesh, the more air flows through. A jacket with just a few ventilation zips cools you far less than a jacket made mostly of mesh. Also look at the hood or collar: it shouldn't flap about at speed. That is why the Superairflow hoodies have a hood that you can fasten down.
A airy jacket deserves an airy back protector. Choose one that is ventilated too, such as the Alpinestars Nucleon Plasma Back Protector. You'll find more choice under back protectors.
Try on a mesh jacket in your riding position, with your arms stretched forward. The armour should stay in place on your shoulders and elbows. For women there is the Stella version with its own fit.
A mesh jacket is made for dry, warm weather. For rain, or for spring and autumn, choose a jacket with a membrane, such as the Alpinestars Aeroshell WP Jacket. The mesh hoodies are also listed under hoodies. You'll find all jackets under motorcycle jackets, and the complete range under motorcycle clothing.
